Brinkman: “Penny Wise, Pound Foolish”
by Glen Miller
Response to “Issue 4: Why or why not?"
As a tax paying citizen I am concerned about our taxes as much as the next person. I believe our government has a duty to be fiscally responsible. At the same time, I am aware of the complexities of running government and the needs of the people government serves.
Cutting funding to police, fire departments, parks, trash collection, etc. in order to put $15.00 * in someone’s pocket due to a rollback of property taxes (Issue 4) is as the Cincinnati Post called it, “Penny Wise, Pound Foolish”. In a time when our city is in need of more police and fire, not less, Mr. Brinkman is fiercely promoting this property tax rollback.

If you listen to Brinkman’s argument, he states that this property tax rollback will attract more home ownership in our city. The Cincinnati Post reported that only half the benefit would go to homeowners, who account for just 40% of residents. The rest would go to the owners of factories, large apartment complexes and other commercial and industrial property. Furthermore, I respectfully ask, how can $15.00* a year make home purchasing in the city of Cincinnati more attractive.
If it is not enough that he is promoting a foolish rollback of property taxes, he has introduced a new conceal carry bill that will undue much of the safeguards put in place by the current law. Mr. Brinkman has spent our precious time and money on an issue that the gun lobby cares about, not the everyday mom and dad in our district. His bill will allow guns in daycares, parks, universities, among other places. It also will put our law enforcement officers in danger. Under his bill, you do not have to inform a law enforcement officer that you are carrying a concealed weapon. You no longer would have to have it in plain sight if you are pulled over. Additionally, he is liberalizing the permit process. This is an urban district, not a rural one. His Alaska-style legislation has no place in our community.
Come November 2nd it is time we brought common sense back to our district. I will address issues that the everyday mom and dad in our district care about: education, jobs, healthcare and public safety. I ask you for the opportunity to serve you as your next State Representative.
