Where Are You Now
Talk About it on Second Sunday on Main
by Joan Kaup, iRhine
Where were you on 9/11?
What were you doing when the Towers of the World Trade Center came crashing down?
It happened September 11, 2001.
Talk about it Sunday, July 9, 2006.
It changed the landscape of a city, policies of a nation, and politics of world. More than that, it changed the spiritual and emotional terrain of a people and created landmines for individuals to navigate as they rebuilt trust and relationships with neighbors, classmates, co-workers, family and friends. Even the most aloof and calloused were shaken to introspection, patriotism and cynicism.
After being numb and then feeling raw, people have grappled with their personal beliefs about terrorism, freedom and equality. It's been five years. How have you sorted through all that has happened?

"The Freedom Center's exhibit is focusing on the responses individuals had to the 9-11 attacks, especially the period of time when, it seemed, just about every social, political, economic and ethnic barrier separating society dissolved, at least temporarily," said Paul Bernish, the Freedom Center's Chief Communications Officer. "For many, there was an overwhelming sense of empathy -- of humanity -- that seemed to wash over the entire world in the days right after Sept. 11. Our exhibit is asking, "what happened to those feelings? Can we experience that emotional reaching out when there's not a national calamity?"
Where are you now in your views of freedom and terrorism? On Sept. 11, 2006, the Freedom Center will unveil a special exhibit reflecting on the events of 9/11 and asking "Where are you now?" You have an opportunity to be a part of this exhibit.
Speak up and give voice. You are invited to contribute your personal views, opinions and perspectives at InkTank World Headquarters (1311 Main Street in historic Over-the-Rhine on Sunday) July 9, noon to 5 p.m. as part of Celebrate Equality and Freedom with Second Sunday on Main. Facilitators and a video crew from the Freedom Center will record your comments and answers. InkTank facilitators will help you compose and express your feelings through the written word.
Share how 9/11 rocked your world and shaped your views toward your fellow man and your future plans. Do you feel more or less free now than you did five years ago? Why? Are you more or less comfortable with your fellow man - even if he/she looks different than you? How did 9/11 alter your career, habits or relationships?
