Local activists recognized at annual dinner

Applied Information Resources honored Katy Heins and Don Spencer at its annual dinner on Wednesday, June 26 at the Vernon Manor.  Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner was the guest speaker.

AIR presented Katy Heins with a“Friend of AIR Award” for her commitment to and work for social and economic justice. After graduating from Xavier University in 1990, she served on the staff of Welcome House, a homeless shelter for women and children in Covington, Kentucky. In 1993, she took a position with the Contact Center, a grassroots organization in Over-the-Rhine that advocates for the rights of low-income people with a special emphasis on the residents of OTR.

After serving as the Center’s director for a number of years, she changed directions in 2005 by becoming the lead, local organizer for Let Justice Roll, a religious coalition dedicated to raising Ohio’s minimum wage. After her involvement in the successful initiative campaign that accomplished that goal last November, she have continued as the interim-director of Let Justice Roll.

Donald Spencer, as a native of this city,  made his first impact as a teacher in the Cincinnati Public Schools and then as the founder and CEO of Donald Spencer and Associates, a highly successful real estate agency. We honor him, however, as a civic leader who has made a significant difference in supporting quality education for all of the city’s children and in insuring that Cincinnati’s parks are accessible to every resident. Among the potpourri of boards listed on his resume, he was a founder and board member of “Friends of the Cincinnati Parks,” and he served as President of the Zion Methodist Church Trustees.
