2004 What Have We Become

Politics changed the world, this publication

It was pro-war versus anti-war, pro-Bush bashing pro-Kerry, and vice-versa. It was Pro-choice against Pro-Life, anti-gay against civil rights. It was age-old traditionalism against a hunger for reform.

Ladies and gentlemen... the year was 2004. And it wasn’t just happening in the national political forum. It was happening inside QCF as well.

2004 was a year that started with two young men of excruciatingly different political pedigree operating QCF magazine and ended with only one of them still around. Consequently, the staff has taken far more liberty, far more responsibility in the operation of our magazine, and our image has been fittingly altered.

Then the really important stuff happened, the divisive stuff:

· Hate provision Article XII gets repealed in Cincinnati by a strong margin
· Nick and Jessica are married for over 2 years now and are still being called “Newlyweds”
· State Issue 1 passes overwhelmingly in several states, reserving the right of marriage to
  one man and one woman
· On the Same topic, Britney Spears married twice this year. The first time as a private joke
and the second time as a public joke

· Mike Allen’s marriage has another good year despite the affair he had with his employee resulting in the public humiliation of his
  wife.

“By far, for me, ‘Nipplegate’ was the most poignant moment of 2004. Sitting in a room full of lesbians as Janet's beautiful nipple made its way across America, I couldn't help but wonder did Jesus horses, aka Dinosaurs, have nipples?”

Michael Kellerman, QCF columnist
  · Old Dirty Bastard died – who saw that coming?
· Adam Dunn hits mammoth home run into the Ohio River, prompting QCF magazine editor
to sit in a canoe waiting for Dunn’s next jack the following night (he didn’t hit one).
· U2 made a great comeback this year selling iPods on TV. I am told next year that they
will be on QVC selling speakers.
· Michael Jackson arrested for child molestation – who saw that coming?
· Bush won a nasty election, can’t forget that…
· The year closes, leaving the aftermath of the Tsunami in Asia and Africa for 2005.

We could go on and on, but we’re not going to. Pick up the Enquirer or CityBeat or anything else for a top 10 list. The fact is, whatever it is that makes the headlines—democratic elections in Afghanistan or Janet Jackson’s nipple falling out—we will be on top the story. We’re not just politics anymore.

QCF magazine is no longer driven to present only the political issues that are relevant to Cincinnati, but rather take a picture of what the people and the city and the issues look like as a whole, now in a “New Yorker” image. We’ve added many new features that will help get inside of the city, such as The InkTank and colaborations with the Wire, as well as more insight into politics by way of politicians, the burbeoning arts community and we will have many new fresh ideas to come.

Thanks for a great 2004, and we will continue to work hard to inform, involve and innovate by always being in it, always on it, and always wanting it!
