March 2005
By Greg Matusak
Queen City Forum Magazine music columnist
I hate award shows. And I especially hate music award shows. AND there is nothing I hate more than a particular self-indulgent award show called “The Grammy’s”. I have hated this award since before they gave Best Heavy Metal Group to Jethro Tull. I have despised this award since before they cut short Frank Sinatra’s acceptance speech for a lifetime achievement award. I have loathed this award since they named Taste of Honey Best New Artist over Elvis Costello in the late ‘70’s. Who the hell is Taste of Honey?!!!!!!!
With all this in mind, I thought I would recommend some great albums that escaped the Grammy nominating committee’s pea-sized brains this past year.

Jill Sobule - “Underdog Victorious” ( Artemis Records)
Yes, Jill Sobule will always be known for writing “that song about two girl kissing” (I see you giggling in the back – cut it out), but she is not only a gifted songwriter, but also a wonderful performer. No pyrotechnics or flashy gimmicks, just well written songs.

Jake Speed & the Freddies –“Huzzah!” (2004Jake Speed)
Technically this c.d. was released two days too late for this year’s Grammy consideration (yet another reason for me to hate the Grammy’s), but it should be getting more press. Jake Speed is a community treasure with his dedication to traditional roots music, yet at the same time incorporating timeless and modern themes throughout this album.

De La Soul – “ The Grind Date” ( Sanctuary Records)
De La Soul is NOT dead!! I was amazed when this album did not receive any recognition, but then again De La Soul have been always stretching the boundaries of hip-hop since their debut album, “3 Feet High And Rising”. |

William Shatner – “Has Been” ( Shout! Factory)
If you only can buy one C.D. this year, don’t buy this one. However, if your budget allows you to splurge and you are a risk taker, pick it up. Not only is there a who’s who of guest appearances (such as Joe Jackson, Aimee Mann, Henry Rollins), but also Ben Folds produced it, so you know it’s solid. The Captain’s cover of Pulps’ Common People and the tune It Hasn’t Happened Yet are must hears.

Kasey Chamber – “Wayward Angel” (Warner Brothers)
I don’t usually recommend country albums (it’s just the way I roll), but Duke Ellington once said “There are only two types of music – good and bad)”. This c.d. definitely falls in the “good” category”. Australian Kasey Chambers puts together a stand out album of well-crafted songs. At the very least download Pony and Hollywood.
