Young-rockers drive, veteran chops

I asked Sebastian Schulz, drummer of the band The Cathedrals if he expected he’s band to be nominated for a CEA Best New Artist Award. He answered frankly “We knew we had the ability to do so, it was just a question of working hard enough.”
The work must have paid off, because last month The Cathedrals took home that award. But don’t take an award’s word for it - look for yourself. Every time The Cathedrals perform, the effort, the dedication, and the devotion can be seen, felt and most importantly heard on stage. There is no denying that is a powerhouse band with some “chops” behind them. Additionally this band is gaining fans across the tri-state.

In The Beginning
The band began in 2003 when Drew Klien (guitar, vocals) and Sebastian Schulz (drums) met at the University of Cincinnati. They had wanted to form a band and needed more musicians. Drew had a friend from Findley, Ohio moved down and that is how Philip Allen (guitar, vocals) entered. They were still short a bass player, until Sebastian remembered Quinn Collins (bass) a student from his freshman year. Drew and Quinn are still students at the prestigious Cincinnati Conservatory of Music (CCM). Sebastian is in the College of Business.
Blessed Is He Who Can Pay Cover Charge
Their sound is a mixture of many different influences that lean on the indie/punk spectrum: bands like Arcade Fire, Hot Snakes and Pixies. If you are interested in a bubblegum/wanna-be/Blink-Lavigne band – stay home. If you are interested in something really new and different to the area – Check them out.
Ye Shall Not Walk Alone
In addition to a top work ethic, Sebastian had many other people to thank for their success in the past year. Dan McKay and Erica Macentire both wrote great articles in CityBeat that really helped spread the word. They mention Puck Dunaway, part owner of Alchemize, and Chris from South Gate House for all their help in getting them shows.
They were privileged to have played with all the great bands that they have played with this last year (and that is quite a list of bands right there). The Cathedrals played with everyone from local favorites like Fairmont Girls and Rockets to Mars to national acts like The Killers and The Von Bondies.
Revelations
Although approached by different labels, The Cathedrals have not sighed a record deal yet. But it is only a matter of time. They feel it is important to “develop” their own sound and you only get one chance to make a first album.
I wish someone would have told Aqua.
